Listen to the news

Many investors define successful investing as beating the market average over the long term. But its virtually certain that sometimes you will buy stocks that fall short of the market average returns. We regret to report that long term IPE Group Limited (HKG:929) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 39% in three years, versus a market return of about 55%.

The recent uptick of 14% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

IPE Group saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 49% per year, over the last three years. In comparison the 15% compound annual share price decline isn't as bad as the EPS drop-off. So, despite the prior disappointment, shareholders must have some confidence the situation will improve, longer term. With a P/E ratio of 47.17, it's fair to say the market sees a brighter future for the business.

It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. This free interactive report on IPE Group's earnings, revenue and cash flow is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.

A Different Perspective

Investors in IPE Group had a tough year, with a total loss of 1.0%, against a market gain of about 48%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 5% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We'd need to see some sustained improvements in the key metrics before we could muster much enthusiasm. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand IPE Group better, we need to consider many other factors. Case in point: We've spotted 4 warning signs for IPE Group you should be aware of, and 1 of them doesn't sit too well with us.
