The five-year loss for Kasen International Holdings (HKG:496) shareholders likely driven by its shrinking earnings

Simply Wall St·03/07/2025 22:49:18
Listen to the news

While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Kasen International Holdings Limited (HKG:496) share price up 21% in a single quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last half decade have been disappointing. In fact, the share price has declined rather badly, down some 66% in that time. So we're not so sure if the recent bounce should be celebrated. But it could be that the fall was overdone.

On a more encouraging note the company has added HK$65m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the five-year loss for shareholders.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the five years over which the share price declined, Kasen International Holdings' earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 35% each year. The share price decline of 20% per year isn't as bad as the EPS decline. The relatively muted share price reaction might be because the market expects the business to turn around.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Kasen International Holdings shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 49% over one year. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 11% per year over five years. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - Kasen International Holdings has 3 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit unpleasant) we think you should know about.
