Some Confidence Is Lacking In The9 Limited (NASDAQ:NCTY) As Shares Slide 31%

Simply Wall St·06/14/2025 12:45:56
Listen to the news

The9 Limited (NASDAQ:NCTY) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 31% share price drop in the last month. To make matters worse, the recent drop has wiped out a year's worth of gains with the share price now back where it started a year ago.

Even after such a large drop in price, The9 may still be sending sell signals at present with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 6.7x, when you consider almost half of the companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios under 4.9x and even P/S lower than 1.8x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does The9's Recent Performance Look Like?

For instance, The9's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the company to still outplay most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, The9 would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 36% decrease to the company's top line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 18% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 16% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

In light of this, it's alarming that The9's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

The Final Word

The9's P/S remain high even after its stock plunged. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that The9 currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term. With a revenue decline on investors' minds, the likelihood of a souring sentiment is quite high which could send the P/S back in line with what we'd expect. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, investors will have a hard time accepting the share price as fair value.
