Listen to the news

Those following along with Cable One, Inc. (NYSE:CABO) will no doubt be intrigued by the recent purchase of shares by Wallace Weitz, Independent Director of the company, who spent a stonking US$928k on stock at an average price of US$133. That increased their holding by a full 127%, which arguably implies the sort of confidence required for a shy sweet-natured nerd to ask the most popular kid in the school to go out on a date.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Cable One

In fact, the recent purchase by Independent Director Wallace Weitz was not their only acquisition of Cable One shares this year. They previously made an even bigger purchase of US$982k worth of shares at a price of US$246 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of US$132. It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock if insiders have bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid US$2.0m for 11.55k shares. But they sold 250.00 shares for US$102k. Overall, Cable One insiders were net buyers during the last year. Their average price was about US$172. This is nice to see since it implies that insiders might see value around current prices. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Cable One insiders own about US$71m worth of shares. That equates to 9.6% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Do The Cable One Insider Transactions Indicate?

It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchases. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. However, we note that the company didn't make a profit over the last twelve months, which makes us cautious. Given that insiders also own a fair bit of Cable One we think they are probably pretty confident of a bright future. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company. At Simply Wall St, we've found that Cable One has 2 warning signs (1 is significant!) that deserve your attention before going any further with your analysis.
