Warren Buffett famously said, 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. Importantly, Construction Partners, Inc. (NASDAQ:ROAD) does carry debt. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. While that is not too common, we often do see indebted companies permanently diluting shareholders because lenders force them to raise capital at a distressed price. Of course, plenty of companies use debt to fund growth, without any negative consequences. When we examine debt levels, we first consider both cash and debt levels, together.
You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that as of March 2025 Construction Partners had US$1.36b of debt, an increase on US$438.4m, over one year. However, because it has a cash reserve of US$101.9m, its net debt is less, at about US$1.26b.
According to the last reported balance sheet, Construction Partners had liabilities of US$513.6m due within 12 months, and liabilities of US$1.43b due beyond 12 months. On the other hand, it had cash of US$101.9m and US$455.9m worth of receivables due within a year. So it has liabilities totalling US$1.39b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
This deficit isn't so bad because Construction Partners is worth US$5.81b, and thus could probably raise enough capital to shore up its balance sheet, if the need arose. However, it is still worthwhile taking a close look at its ability to pay off debt.

We measure a company's debt load relative to its earnings power by looking at its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and by calculating how easily its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) cover its interest expense (interest cover). The advantage of this approach is that we take into account both the absolute quantum of debt (with net debt to EBITDA) and the actual interest expenses associated with that debt (with its interest cover ratio).
Construction Partners's debt is 4.6 times its EBITDA, and its EBIT cover its interest expense 2.6 times over. This suggests that while the debt levels are significant, we'd stop short of calling them problematic. The good news is that Construction Partners grew its EBIT a smooth 50% over the last twelve months. Like the milk of human kindness that sort of growth increases resilience, making the company more capable of managing debt. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Construction Partners's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. Finally, a business needs free cash flow to pay off debt; accounting profits just don't cut it. So we always check how much of that EBIT is translated into free cash flow. During the last three years, Construction Partners produced sturdy free cash flow equating to 64% of its EBIT, about what we'd expect. This cold hard cash means it can reduce its debt when it wants to.
Happily, Construction Partners's impressive EBIT growth rate implies it has the upper hand on its debt. But we must concede we find its net debt to EBITDA has the opposite effect. All these things considered, it appears that Construction Partners can comfortably handle its current debt levels. Of course, while this leverage can enhance returns on equity, it does bring more risk, so it's worth keeping an eye on this one. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it.
