Insiders At Weis Markets Sold US$265m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

Listen to the news

Over the past year, many Weis Markets, Inc. (NYSE:WMK) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Weis Markets Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The insider, Robert Weis, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$140m worth of shares at a price of US$65.00 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$73.91). When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. It is worth noting that this sale was 100% of Robert Weis's holding.

Does Weis Markets Boast High Insider Ownership?
