Listen to the news

We're definitely into long term investing, but some companies are simply bad investments over any time frame. We really hate to see fellow investors lose their hard-earned money. Anyone who held Xi'an Haitian Antenna Technologies Co., Ltd. (HKG:8227) for five years would be nursing their metaphorical wounds since the share price dropped 85% in that time. And it's not just long term holders hurting, because the stock is down 52% in the last year. Furthermore, it's down 40% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders. We really hope anyone holding through that price crash has a diversified portfolio. Even when you lose money, you don't have to lose the lesson.

If the past week is anything to go by, investor sentiment for Xi'an Haitian Antenna Technologies isn't positive, so let's see if there's a mismatch between fundamentals and the share price.

Because Xi'an Haitian Antenna Technologies made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

In the last five years Xi'an Haitian Antenna Technologies saw its revenue shrink by 21% per year. That puts it in an unattractive cohort, to put it mildly. So it's not altogether surprising to see the share price down 13% per year in the same time period. We don't think this is a particularly promising picture. Ironically, that behavior could create an opportunity for the contrarian investor - but only if there are good reasons to predict a brighter future.

A Different Perspective

Investors in Xi'an Haitian Antenna Technologies had a tough year, with a total loss of 52%, against a market gain of about 27%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 13% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - Xi'an Haitian Antenna Technologies has 6 warning signs (and 3 which are significant) we think you should know about.
