Wine's Link International Holdings Limited (HKG:8509) Not Doing Enough For Some Investors As Its Shares Slump 28%

Simply Wall St·03/25/2025 23:47:20
Listen to the news

The Wine's Link International Holdings Limited (HKG:8509) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 28%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 33% in that time.

Even after such a large drop in price, Wine's Link International Holdings' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 2.9x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the market in Hong Kong, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 11x and even P/E's above 23x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

Recent times have been quite advantageous for Wine's Link International Holdings as its earnings have been rising very briskly. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Wine's Link International Holdings' Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as Wine's Link International Holdings' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 116%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 45% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 19% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

In light of this, it's understandable that Wine's Link International Holdings' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.

What We Can Learn From Wine's Link International Holdings' P/E?

Shares in Wine's Link International Holdings have plummeted and its P/E is now low enough to touch the ground. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

As we suspected, our examination of Wine's Link International Holdings revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its low P/E, given they look worse than current market expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Wine's Link International Holdings (of which 1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) you should know about.
