China Ting Group Holdings Limited (HKG:3398) Shares May Have Slumped 26% But Getting In Cheap Is Still Unlikely

Listen to the news

The China Ting Group Holdings Limited (HKG:3398) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 26%. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 51% share price decline.

Although its price has dipped substantially, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about China Ting Group Holdings' P/S ratio of 0.2x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Luxury industry in Hong Kong is also close to 0.6x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does China Ting Group Holdings' P/S Mean For Shareholders?

For example, consider that China Ting Group Holdings' financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. Perhaps investors believe the recent revenue performance is enough to keep in line with the industry, which is keeping the P/S from dropping off. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, China Ting Group Holdings would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 3.5%. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with revenue growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing revenue over that time.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 21% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.

With this information, we find it concerning that China Ting Group Holdings is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are way less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

The Final Word

Following China Ting Group Holdings' share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

The fact that China Ting Group Holdings currently trades at a P/S on par with the rest of the industry is surprising to us since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term, all while the industry is set to grow. Even though it matches the industry, we're uncomfortable with the current P/S ratio, as this dismal revenue performance is unlikely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, investors will have a hard time accepting the share price as fair value.

It is also worth noting that we have found 3 warning signs for China Ting Group Holdings (1 is significant!) that you need to take into consideration.
