We Think Carry Wealth Holdings (HKG:643) Can Afford To Drive Business Growth

Listen to the news

There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. But while history lauds those rare successes, those that fail are often forgotten; who remembers Pets.com?

Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether Carry Wealth Holdings (HKG:643) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. We'll start by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves in order to calculate its cash runway.

How Long Is Carry Wealth Holdings' Cash Runway?

A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. When Carry Wealth Holdings last reported its December 2024 balance sheet in April 2025, it had zero debt and cash worth HK$114m. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through HK$18m. That means it had a cash runway of about 6.3 years as of December 2024. Even though this is but one measure of the company's cash burn, the thought of such a long cash runway warms our bellies in a comforting way. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.

How Well Is Carry Wealth Holdings Growing?

We reckon the fact that Carry Wealth Holdings managed to shrink its cash burn by 23% over the last year is rather encouraging. And considering that its operating revenue gained 35% during that period, that's great to see. It seems to be growing nicely. In reality, this article only makes a short study of the company's growth data. This graph of historic revenue growth shows how Carry Wealth Holdings is building its business over time.

Can Carry Wealth Holdings Raise More Cash Easily?

We are certainly impressed with the progress Carry Wealth Holdings has made over the last year, but it is also worth considering how costly it would be if it wanted to raise more cash to fund faster growth. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.

Carry Wealth Holdings' cash burn of HK$18m is about 8.3% of its HK$218m market capitalisation. That's a low proportion, so we figure the company would be able to raise more cash to fund growth, with a little dilution, or even to simply borrow some money.

How Risky Is Carry Wealth Holdings' Cash Burn Situation?

It may already be apparent to you that we're relatively comfortable with the way Carry Wealth Holdings is burning through its cash. In particular, we think its cash runway stands out as evidence that the company is well on top of its spending. Its cash burn reduction wasn't quite as good, but was still rather encouraging! After taking into account the various metrics mentioned in this report, we're pretty comfortable with how the company is spending its cash, as it seems on track to meet its needs over the medium term.
