Paycom Software's (NYSE:PAYC) investors will be pleased with their notable 46% return over the last year

Listen to the news

If you want to compound wealth in the stock market, you can do so by buying an index fund. But investors can boost returns by picking market-beating companies to own shares in. For example, the Paycom Software, Inc. (NYSE:PAYC) share price is up 45% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market return of around 14% (not including dividends). That's a solid performance by our standards! Unfortunately the longer term returns are not so good, with the stock falling 32% in the last three years.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Over the last twelve months, Paycom Software actually shrank its EPS by 14%.

This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Therefore, it seems likely that investors are putting more weight on metrics other than EPS, at the moment.

We doubt the modest 0.7% dividend yield is doing much to support the share price. However the year on year revenue growth of 9.9% would help. We do see some companies suppress earnings in order to accelerate revenue growth.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Paycom Software shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 46% over one year. And that does include the dividend. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 4% per year over five years. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. To that end, you should be aware of the 1 warning sign we've spotted with Paycom Software .
