Legendary fund manager Li Lu (who Charlie Munger backed) once said, 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. Importantly, Corporación América Airports S.A. (NYSE:CAAP) does carry debt. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?
Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Having said that, the most common situation is where a company manages its debt reasonably well - and to its own advantage. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.
You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that Corporación América Airports had US$1.14b of debt in March 2025, down from US$1.29b, one year before. However, it does have US$523.5m in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about US$615.3m.
We can see from the most recent balance sheet that Corporación América Airports had liabilities of US$549.2m falling due within a year, and liabilities of US$2.16b due beyond that. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of US$523.5m as well as receivables valued at US$226.7m due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by US$1.96b.
Corporación América Airports has a market capitalization of US$3.27b, so it could very likely raise cash to ameliorate its balance sheet, if the need arose. But it's clear that we should definitely closely examine whether it can manage its debt without dilution.

We measure a company's debt load relative to its earnings power by looking at its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and by calculating how easily its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) cover its interest expense (interest cover). The advantage of this approach is that we take into account both the absolute quantum of debt (with net debt to EBITDA) and the actual interest expenses associated with that debt (with its interest cover ratio).

That puts it in a very strong position to pay down debt.

When we consider all the elements mentioned above, it seems to us that Corporación América Airports is managing its debt quite well.
