Constellation Brands, Inc.'s (NYSE:STZ) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 3.1x may not look like an appealing investment opportunity when you consider close to half the companies in the Beverage industry in the United States have P/S ratios below 2.4x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

How Has Constellation Brands Performed Recently?

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Constellation Brands' revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the market is expecting the poor revenue to reverse, justifying it's current high P/S.. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Constellation Brands would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 9.9% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 0.01% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 5.2% per year, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's alarming that Constellation Brands' P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

What We Can Learn From Constellation Brands' P/S?

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Despite analysts forecasting some poorer-than-industry revenue growth figures for Constellation Brands, this doesn't appear to be impacting the P/S in the slightest. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
