We Think Twist Bioscience (NASDAQ:TWST) Can Easily Afford To Drive Business Growth

Simply Wall St·07/28/2025 10:35:13
Listen to the news

There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. For example, biotech and mining exploration companies often lose money for years before finding success with a new treatment or mineral discovery. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.

So, the natural question for Twist Bioscience (NASDAQ:TWST) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. Let's start with an examination of the business' cash, relative to its cash burn.

Does Twist Bioscience Have A Long Cash Runway?

A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. As at March 2025, Twist Bioscience had cash of US$257m and no debt. Importantly, its cash burn was US$65m over the trailing twelve months. That means it had a cash runway of about 3.9 years as of March 2025. Notably, however, analysts think that Twist Bioscience will break even (at a free cash flow level) before then. In that case, it may never reach the end of its cash runway. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.

How Well Is Twist Bioscience Growing?

We reckon the fact that Twist Bioscience managed to shrink its cash burn by 31% over the last year is rather encouraging. On top of that, operating revenue was up 25%, making for a heartening combination We think it is growing rather well, upon reflection. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.

Can Twist Bioscience Raise More Cash Easily?

We are certainly impressed with the progress Twist Bioscience has made over the last year, but it is also worth considering how costly it would be if it wanted to raise more cash to fund faster growth. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.

Since it has a market capitalisation of US$2.2b, Twist Bioscience's US$65m in cash burn equates to about 3.0% of its market value. That's a low proportion, so we figure the company would be able to raise more cash to fund growth, with a little dilution, or even to simply borrow some money.

Is Twist Bioscience's Cash Burn A Worry?

As you can probably tell by now, we're not too worried about Twist Bioscience's cash burn. In particular, we think its cash runway stands out as evidence that the company is well on top of its spending. And even though its cash burn reduction wasn't quite as impressive, it was still a positive. It's clearly very positive to see that analysts are forecasting the company will break even fairly soon. Taking all the factors in this report into account, we're not at all worried about its cash burn, as the business appears well capitalized to spend as needs be. Its important for readers to be cognizant of the risks that can affect the company's operations, and we've picked out 2 warning signs for Twist Bioscience that investors should know when investing in the stock.
