Listen to the news

While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Kunming Dianchi Water Treatment Co., Ltd. (HKG:3768) share price up 20% in a single quarter. But over the last half decade, the stock has not performed well. In fact, the share price is down 58%, which falls well short of the return you could get by buying an index fund.

The recent uptick of 13% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Looking back five years, both Kunming Dianchi Water Treatment's share price and EPS declined; the latter at a rate of 6.5% per year. Readers should note that the share price has fallen faster than the EPS, at a rate of 16% per year, over the period. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, in the past. The less favorable sentiment is reflected in its current P/E ratio of 2.57.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here..

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Kunming Dianchi Water Treatment's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Dividends have been really beneficial for Kunming Dianchi Water Treatment shareholders, and that cash payout explains why its total shareholder loss of 48%, over the last 5 years, isn't as bad as the share price return.

A Different Perspective

Kunming Dianchi Water Treatment shareholders are up 20% for the year. But that was short of the market average. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it is certainly better than the yearly loss of about 8% endured over half a decade. It could well be that the business is stabilizing. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Kunming Dianchi Water Treatment better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that Kunming Dianchi Water Treatment is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 2 of those make us uncomfortable...
