If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So when we looked at the ROCE trend of National Beverage (NASDAQ:FIZZ) we really liked what we saw.
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on National Beverage is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.44 = US$235m ÷ (US$673m - US$141m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to May 2025).
Therefore, National Beverage has an ROCE of 44%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Beverage industry average of 17%.

National Beverage is showing promise given that its ROCE is trending up and to the right. Looking at the data, we can see that even though capital employed in the business has remained relatively flat, the ROCE generated has risen by 35% over the last five years. Basically the business is generating higher returns from the same amount of capital and that is proof that there are improvements in the company's efficiencies. On that front, things are looking good so it's worth exploring what management has said about growth plans going forward.
In summary, we're delighted to see that National Beverage has been able to increase efficiencies and earn higher rates of return on the same amount of capital. Since the stock has returned a solid 80% to shareholders over the last five years, it's fair to say investors are beginning to recognize these changes. In light of that, we think it's worth looking further into this stock because if National Beverage can keep these trends up, it could have a bright future ahead.
On the other side of ROCE, we have to consider valuation. That's why we have a FREE intrinsic value estimation for FIZZ on our platform that is definitely worth checking out.
