Matson (NYSE:MATX) Is Increasing Its Dividend To $0.36

Simply Wall St·08/05/2025 14:15:43
Listen to the news

Matson, Inc.'s (NYSE:MATX) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to $0.36 on 4th of September. Even though the dividend went up, the yield is still quite low at only 1.3%.

Matson's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings

It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. Before making this announcement, Matson was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

EPS is set to fall by 24.7% over the next 12 months. If the dividend continues along the path it has been on recently, we estimate the payout ratio could be 13%, which is comfortable for the company to continue in the future.

Matson Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was $0.68, compared to the most recent full-year payment of $1.44. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 7.8% a year over that time. Dividends have grown at a reasonable rate over this period, and without any major cuts in the payment over time, we think this is an attractive combination as it provides a nice boost to shareholder returns.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. Matson has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 50% per annum. Rapid earnings growth and a low payout ratio suggest this company has been effectively reinvesting in its business. Should that continue, this company could have a bright future.

We Really Like Matson's Dividend

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Matson is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. The company is generating plenty of cash, and the earnings also quite easily cover the distributions. If earnings do fall over the next 12 months, the dividend could be buffeted a little bit, but we don't think it should cause too much of a problem in the long term. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
