CVR Energy, Inc. (NYSE:CVI) Soars 27% But It's A Story Of Risk Vs Reward

Listen to the news

Despite an already strong run, CVR Energy, Inc. (NYSE:CVI) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 27% in the last thirty days. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 27% in the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, CVR Energy's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Oil and Gas industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 1.6x and even P/S above 5x are quite common. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does CVR Energy's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

CVR Energy could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

Keen to find out how analysts think CVR Energy's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For CVR Energy?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like CVR Energy's to be considered reasonable.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 16%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 24% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 4.9% over the next year. With the industry predicted to deliver 5.5% growth , the company is positioned for a comparable revenue result.

With this information, we find it odd that CVR Energy is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Final Word

CVR Energy's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

It looks to us like the P/S figures for CVR Energy remain low despite growth that is expected to be in line with other companies in the industry. When we see middle-of-the-road revenue growth like this, we assume it must be the potential risks that are what is placing pressure on the P/S ratio. However, if you agree with the analysts' forecasts, you may be able to pick up the stock at an attractive price.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for CVR Energy you should know about.
