Listen to the news

Investors who take an interest in ProFrac Holding Corp. (NASDAQ:ACDC) should definitely note that the Executive Chairman & President, Matthew Wilks, recently paid US$3.80 per share to buy US$165k worth of the stock. While that's a very decent purchase to our minds, it was proportionally a bit modest, boosting their holding by just 2.4%.

ProFrac Holding Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by insider Farris Wilks for US$10m worth of shares, at about US$4.00 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of US$3.90. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.

In the last twelve months ProFrac Holding insiders were buying shares, but not selling. They paid about US$4.66 on average. Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. ProFrac Holding insiders own about US$30m worth of shares. That equates to 4.3% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About ProFrac Holding Insiders?

It is good to see recent purchasing. And the longer term insider transactions also give us confidence. But on the other hand, the company made a loss during the last year, which makes us a little cautious. When combined with notable insider ownership, these factors suggest ProFrac Holding insiders are well aligned, and that they may think the share price is too low. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company.
