MOBI Development Co., Ltd.'s (HKG:947) 31% Share Price Surge Not Quite Adding Up

Simply Wall St·09/29/2025 00:08:17
Listen to the news

Despite an already strong run, MOBI Development Co., Ltd. (HKG:947) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 31% in the last thirty days. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 16% is also fairly reasonable.

Even after such a large jump in price, it's still not a stretch to say that MOBI Development's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Communications industry in Hong Kong, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.7x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How MOBI Development Has Been Performing

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at MOBI Development over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps investors believe the recent revenue performance is enough to keep in line with the industry, which is keeping the P/S from dropping off. If you like the company, you'd at least be hoping this is the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like MOBI Development's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 12%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 33% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 39% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.

In light of this, it's somewhat alarming that MOBI Development's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh on the share price eventually.

The Final Word

Its shares have lifted substantially and now MOBI Development's P/S is back within range of the industry median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We find it unexpected that MOBI Development trades at a P/S ratio that is comparable to the rest of the industry, despite experiencing declining revenues during the medium-term, while the industry as a whole is expected to grow. Even though it matches the industry, we're uncomfortable with the current P/S ratio, as this dismal revenue performance is unlikely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Unless the the circumstances surrounding the recent medium-term improve, it wouldn't be wrong to expect a a difficult period ahead for the company's shareholders.
