From hunger relief in Virginia to after-school programs in Connecticut, BJ’s Wholesale Club (NYSE: BJ) today announced it is donating more than $1.2 million to local organizations nominated by its team members. The grants will help families in 17 states and Washington, D.C., meet their essential needs.

“BJ’s is driven by a powerful purpose: we take care of the families who depend on us,” said Bob Eddy, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, BJ’s Wholesale Club. “We’re deeply committed to supporting our communities and making a difference in the places where we live and work.”

Team member Shannon Ashton, Lead Recruiter at BJ’s Wholesale Club, nominated the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South in Taunton, Massachusetts, where she serves as a weekly volunteer leading the organization’s Dance Academy. The $40,000 grant awarded to the Boys & Girls Clubs will help expand out-of-school programs focused on academic success, health and well-being, leadership development and workforce readiness.

In Staten Island, New York, the Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund was nominated by Cosimo Parrelli, Assistant Club Manager at BJ’s. The fund was established to honor Carl Bini and his lifelong passion for helping others in his community. Carl was a New York City firefighter who lost his life on September 11, 2001. Cosimo is actively involved with the fund, volunteering, making regular donations and serving on committees. The organization will receive $50,000 to provide groceries, hygiene kits and free health screenings to more than 2,000 underserved residents.

“Our partners and friends are very important to us,” said Derek Heim, President and CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South. “The partnership we’ve developed with BJ’s Wholesale Club is transformational. It’s allowing us to succeed as an organization and supports us in our mission to help build great futures for young people.”

All charities receiving grants align with BJ’s purpose and serve the three main pillars of BJ’s Charitable Foundation: hunger relief, education and health and wellness. Established in 2004, the Foundation partners with local and national non-profits to provide essential needs to families in the communities where BJ’s members and team members live and work. Since its inception, BJ’s Charitable Foundation has awarded over $43 million to non-profit organizations and schools.
