Despite an already strong run, China Uptown Group Company Limited (HKG:2330) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 102% in the last thirty days. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 83%.
Although its price has surged higher, there still wouldn't be many who think China Uptown Group's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.2x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Hong Kong's Real Estate industry is similar at about 0.7x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

With revenue growth that's exceedingly strong of late, China Uptown Group has been doing very well. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to wane, which has kept the share price, and thus the P/S ratio, from rising. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.
Although there are no analyst estimates available for China Uptown Group, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.China Uptown Group's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 235% last year. Still, revenue has fallen 54% in total from three years ago, which is quite disappointing. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenues over that time.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 5.2% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.
In light of this, it's somewhat alarming that China Uptown Group's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.
Its shares have lifted substantially and now China Uptown Group's P/S is back within range of the industry median. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
The fact that China Uptown Group currently trades at a P/S on par with the rest of the industry is surprising to us since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term, all while the industry is set to grow. When we see revenue heading backwards in the context of growing industry forecasts, it'd make sense to expect a possible share price decline on the horizon, sending the moderate P/S lower. Unless the the circumstances surrounding the recent medium-term improve, it wouldn't be wrong to expect a a difficult period ahead for the company's shareholders.
And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for China Uptown Group (of which 1 can't be ignored!) you should know about.
