Some Confidence Is Lacking In Alco Holdings Limited (HKG:328) As Shares Slide 66%

Simply Wall St·10/31/2025 22:47:35
Listen to the news

Alco Holdings Limited (HKG:328) shares have had a horrible month, losing 66% after a relatively good period beforehand. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 95% loss during that time.

Even after such a large drop in price, you could still be forgiven for thinking Alco Holdings is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 1.4x, considering almost half the companies in Hong Kong's Consumer Durables industry have P/S ratios below 0.7x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

What Does Alco Holdings' P/S Mean For Shareholders?

For example, consider that Alco Holdings' financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. It might be that many expect the company to still outplay most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For Alco Holdings?

Alco Holdings' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 33% decrease to the company's top line. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 82% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 8.9% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

With this in mind, we find it worrying that Alco Holdings' P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

The Final Word

Alco Holdings' P/S remain high even after its stock plunged. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our examination of Alco Holdings revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term isn't resulting in a P/S as low as we expected, given the industry is set to grow. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as this revenue performance is highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, investors will have a hard time accepting the share price as fair value.
