Guotai Junan International Holdings' (HKG:1788) earnings growth rate lags the 73% CAGR delivered to shareholders

Listen to the news

Some Guotai Junan International Holdings Limited (HKG:1788) shareholders are probably rather concerned to see the share price fall 45% over the last three months. But over the last three years the stock has shone bright like a diamond. In fact, the share price has taken off in that time, up 372%. So you might argue that the recent reduction in the share price is unremarkable in light of the longer term performance. The thing to consider is whether there is still too much elation around the company's prospects.

In light of the stock dropping 19% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive three-year return.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Guotai Junan International Holdings was able to grow its EPS at 31% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. In comparison, the 68% per year gain in the share price outpaces the EPS growth. This indicates that the market is feeling more optimistic on the stock, after the last few years of progress. It's not unusual to see the market 're-rate' a stock, after a few years of growth.

It is of course excellent to see how Guotai Junan International Holdings has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. You can see how its balance sheet has strengthened (or weakened) over time in this free interactive graphic.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Guotai Junan International Holdings, it has a TSR of 418% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Guotai Junan International Holdings shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 152% over one year. That's including the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 29% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. To that end, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with Guotai Junan International Holdings (including 1 which doesn't sit too well with us) .
