Strong week for New Focus Auto Tech Holdings (HKG:360) shareholders doesn't alleviate pain of five-year loss

Listen to the news

New Focus Auto Tech Holdings Limited (HKG:360) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 14% in the last week. But over the last half decade, the stock has not performed well. In fact, the share price is down 29%, which falls well short of the return you could get by buying an index fund.

The recent uptick of 14% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.

Given that New Focus Auto Tech Holdings didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

In the last five years New Focus Auto Tech Holdings saw its revenue shrink by 15% per year. That puts it in an unattractive cohort, to put it mildly. On the face of it we'd posit the share price fall of 5% compound, over five years is well justified by the fundamental deterioration. We doubt many shareholders are delighted with this share price performance. Risk averse investors probably wouldn't like this one much.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 40% in the last year, New Focus Auto Tech Holdings shareholders lost 24%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 5% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business.
