Is Dimmi Life Holdings (HKG:1667) Using Too Much Debt?

Listen to the news

Some say volatility, rather than debt, is the best way to think about risk as an investor, but Warren Buffett famously said that 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. As with many other companies Dimmi Life Holdings Limited (HKG:1667) makes use of debt. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?

When Is Debt Dangerous?

Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Of course, debt can be an important tool in businesses, particularly capital heavy businesses. When we think about a company's use of debt, we first look at cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does Dimmi Life Holdings Carry?

As you can see below, Dimmi Life Holdings had HK$99.4m of debt at September 2025, down from HK$168.7m a year prior. However, it also had HK$9.17m in cash, and so its net debt is HK$90.3m.

How Strong Is Dimmi Life Holdings' Balance Sheet?

The latest balance sheet data shows that Dimmi Life Holdings had liabilities of HK$88.0m due within a year, and liabilities of HK$95.6m falling due after that. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of HK$9.17m as well as receivables valued at HK$171.3m due within 12 months. So its total liabilities are just about perfectly matched by its shorter-term, liquid assets.

This state of affairs indicates that Dimmi Life Holdings' balance sheet looks quite solid, as its total liabilities are just about equal to its liquid assets. So it's very unlikely that the HK$336.0m company is short on cash, but still worth keeping an eye on the balance sheet. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But you can't view debt in total isolation; since Dimmi Life Holdings will need earnings to service that debt. So if you're keen to discover more about its earnings, it might be worth checking out this graph of its long term earnings trend.

Over 12 months, Dimmi Life Holdings made a loss at the EBIT level, and saw its revenue drop to HK$94m, which is a fall of 22%. To be frank that doesn't bode well.

Caveat Emptor

While Dimmi Life Holdings's falling revenue is about as heartwarming as a wet blanket, arguably its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss is even less appealing. Indeed, it lost a very considerable HK$52m at the EBIT level. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above does not give us much confidence that company should be using so much debt. So we think its balance sheet is a little strained, though not beyond repair. Another cause for caution is that is bled HK$29m in negative free cash flow over the last twelve months. So in short it's a really risky stock. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. These risks can be hard to spot. Every company has them, and we've spotted 4 warning signs for Dimmi Life Holdings (of which 3 don't sit too well with us!) you should know about.
