Some Youzan Technology Limited (HKG:8083) Shareholders Look For Exit As Shares Take 27% Pounding

Simply Wall St·12/02/2025 22:03:59
Listen to the news

Youzan Technology Limited (HKG:8083) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 27% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Looking at the bigger picture, even after this poor month the stock is up 41% in the last year.

Even after such a large drop in price, given close to half the companies operating in Hong Kong's Software industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 2.4x, you may still consider Youzan Technology as a stock to potentially avoid with its 3x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

What Does Youzan Technology's Recent Performance Look Like?

With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Youzan Technology has been relatively sluggish. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to undergo a reversal of fortunes, which has elevated the P/S ratio. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as high as Youzan Technology's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 4.2% gain to the company's revenues. Still, lamentably revenue has fallen 1.8% in aggregate from three years ago, which is disappointing. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 0.3% as estimated by the two analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 35% growth, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

With this information, we find it concerning that Youzan Technology is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

The Final Word

There's still some elevation in Youzan Technology's P/S, even if the same can't be said for its share price recently. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

It comes as a surprise to see Youzan Technology trade at such a high P/S given the revenue forecasts look less than stellar. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. At these price levels, investors should remain cautious, particularly if things don't improve.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 1 warning sign for Youzan Technology that you need to be mindful of.
