Vision Synergy Holdings (HKG:627 investor five-year losses grow to 87% as the stock sheds HK$170m this past week

Listen to the news

Long term investing is the way to go, but that doesn't mean you should hold every stock forever. We don't wish catastrophic capital loss on anyone. Anyone who held Vision Synergy Holdings Limited (HKG:627) for five years would be nursing their metaphorical wounds since the share price dropped 87% in that time. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 39% in the last three months. We really feel for shareholders in this scenario. It's a good reminder of the importance of diversification, and it's worth keeping in mind there's more to life than money, anyway.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

Because Vision Synergy Holdings made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

Over half a decade Vision Synergy Holdings reduced its trailing twelve month revenue by 38% for each year. That's definitely a weaker result than most pre-profit companies report. So it's not that strange that the share price dropped 13% per year in that period. This kind of price performance makes us very wary, especially when combined with falling revenue. Of course, the poor performance could mean the market has been too severe selling down. That can happen.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 40% in the last year, Vision Synergy Holdings shareholders lost 13%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 13% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Vision Synergy Holdings better, we need to consider many other factors. Case in point: We've spotted 3 warning signs for Vision Synergy Holdings you should be aware of, and 1 of them is a bit concerning.
