Does Offerpad Solutions (NYSE:OPAD) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?

Simply Wall St·01/10/2026 14:28:39
Listen to the news

Howard Marks put it nicely when he said that, rather than worrying about share price volatility, 'The possibility of permanent loss is the risk I worry about... and every practical investor I know worries about.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. We can see that Offerpad Solutions Inc. (NYSE:OPAD) does use debt in its business. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.

What Risk Does Debt Bring?

Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Having said that, the most common situation is where a company manages its debt reasonably well - and to its own advantage. When we examine debt levels, we first consider both cash and debt levels, together.

What Is Offerpad Solutions's Net Debt?

As you can see below, Offerpad Solutions had US$156.8m of debt at September 2025, down from US$250.8m a year prior. On the flip side, it has US$31.0m in cash leading to net debt of about US$125.8m.

A Look At Offerpad Solutions' Liabilities

We can see from the most recent balance sheet that Offerpad Solutions had liabilities of US$155.6m falling due within a year, and liabilities of US$28.0m due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had US$31.0m in cash and US$7.39m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling US$145.3m more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.

The deficiency here weighs heavily on the US$56.0m company itself, as if a child were struggling under the weight of an enormous back-pack full of books, his sports gear, and a trumpet. So we'd watch its balance sheet closely, without a doubt. At the end of the day, Offerpad Solutions would probably need a major re-capitalization if its creditors were to demand repayment. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if Offerpad Solutions can strengthen its balance sheet over time. In the last year Offerpad Solutions had a loss before interest and tax, and actually shrunk its revenue by 36%, to US$628m. To be frank that doesn't bode well.

Caveat Emptor

While Offerpad Solutions's falling revenue is about as heartwarming as a wet blanket, arguably its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss is even less appealing. Its EBIT loss was a whopping US$40m. Combining this information with the significant liabilities we already touched on makes us very hesitant about this stock, to say the least. That said, it is possible that the company will turn its fortunes around. But we think that is unlikely since it is low on liquid assets, and made a loss of US$55m in the last year. So while it's not wise to assume the company will fail, we do think it's risky. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. For example, we've discovered 4 warning signs for Offerpad Solutions (2 are concerning!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
