What Franklin Covey Co.'s (NYSE:FC) 29% Share Price Gain Is Not Telling You

Simply Wall St·01/16/2026 10:21:22
Listen to the news

Franklin Covey Co. (NYSE:FC) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 29% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 36% over that time.

Although its price has surged higher, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Franklin Covey's P/S ratio of 0.9x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Professional Services industry in the United States is also close to 1.2x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Franklin Covey Has Been Performing

Franklin Covey could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the market is expecting its poor revenue performance to improve, keeping the P/S from dropping. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Franklin Covey's to be considered reasonable.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 9.0%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 3.3% in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 3.2% per year as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 6.6% growth each year, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

With this information, we find it interesting that Franklin Covey is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.

The Final Word

Franklin Covey's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our look at the analysts forecasts of Franklin Covey's revenue prospects has shown that its inferior revenue outlook isn't negatively impacting its P/S as much as we would have predicted. At present, we aren't confident in the P/S as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Circumstances like this present a risk to current and prospective investors who may see share prices fall if the low revenue growth impacts the sentiment.
