Listen to the news

We think all investors should try to buy and hold high quality multi-year winners. While the best companies are hard to find, but they can generate massive returns over long periods. Don't believe it? Then look at the Metaspacex Limited (HKG:1796) share price. It's 852% higher than it was five years ago. And this is just one example of the epic gains achieved by some long term investors. And in the last week the share price has popped 30%. We love happy stories like this one. The company should be really proud of that performance!

Since the stock has added HK$394m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

Metaspacex isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In the last 5 years Metaspacex saw its revenue grow at 4.0% per year. That's not a very high growth rate considering the bottom line. Therefore, we're a little surprised to see the share price gain has been so strong, at 57% per year, compound, over the period. We don't think the growth over the period is that great, but it could be that faster growth appears to some to be on the horizon. It's not immediately obvious to us why the market has been so enthusiastic about the stock, but a more detailed look at revenue and profit trends might reveal why shareholders are optimistic.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Metaspacex shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 89% over the last year. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 57%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
