When you see that almost half of the companies in the Specialty Retail industry in Hong Kong have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.6x, Artini Holdings Limited (HKG:789) looks to be giving off strong sell signals with its 3.5x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

Recent times have been quite advantageous for Artini Holdings as its revenue has been rising very briskly. It seems that many are expecting the strong revenue performance to beat most other companies over the coming period, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.
We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Artini Holdings' earnings, revenue and cash flow.In order to justify its P/S ratio, Artini Holdings would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 61% gain to the company's top line. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 181% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 50% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker, based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
With this in mind, we find it worrying that Artini Holdings' P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
The fact that Artini Holdings currently trades on a higher P/S relative to the industry is an oddity, since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider industry forecast. When we see slower than industry revenue growth but an elevated P/S, there's considerable risk of the share price declining, sending the P/S lower. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
It is also worth noting that we have found 3 warning signs for Artini Holdings (1 shouldn't be ignored!) that you need to take into consideration.
