China Jicheng Holdings Limited's (HKG:1027) 29% Share Price Plunge Could Signal Some Risk

Listen to the news

The China Jicheng Holdings Limited (HKG:1027) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 29%. Regardless, last month's decline is barely a blip on the stock's price chart as it has gained a monstrous 319% in the last year.

Even after such a large drop in price, when almost half of the companies in Hong Kong's Luxury industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.7x, you may still consider China Jicheng Holdings as a stock not worth researching with its 3.4x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has China Jicheng Holdings Performed Recently?

The recent revenue growth at China Jicheng Holdings would have to be considered satisfactory if not spectacular. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this good revenue growth will be enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on China Jicheng Holdings' earnings, revenue and cash flow.

How Is China Jicheng Holdings' Revenue Growth Trending?

China Jicheng Holdings' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 5.0% gain to the company's revenues. Still, lamentably revenue has fallen 4.3% in aggregate from three years ago, which is disappointing. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 18% shows it's an unpleasant look.

In light of this, it's alarming that China Jicheng Holdings' P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.

What We Can Learn From China Jicheng Holdings' P/S?

A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate China Jicheng Holdings' very lofty P/S. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that China Jicheng Holdings currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as this revenue performance is highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, investors will have a hard time accepting the share price as fair value.
