China Carbon Neutral Development Group Limited's (HKG:1372) 27% Share Price Plunge Could Signal Some Risk

Simply Wall St·01/27/2026 00:11:51
Listen to the news

China Carbon Neutral Development Group Limited (HKG:1372) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 27% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Nonetheless, the last 30 days have barely left a scratch on the stock's annual performance, which is up a whopping 321%.

Although its price has dipped substantially, you could still be forgiven for thinking China Carbon Neutral Development Group is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 1.3x, considering almost half the companies in Hong Kong's Construction industry have P/S ratios below 0.4x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

What Does China Carbon Neutral Development Group's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

For example, consider that China Carbon Neutral Development Group's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. Perhaps the market believes the company can do enough to outperform the rest of the industry in the near future, which is keeping the P/S ratio high. If not, then existing shareholders may be quite nervous about the viability of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the industry for P/S ratios like China Carbon Neutral Development Group's to be considered reasonable.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 9.4%. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 21% overall rise in revenue. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 9.3% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we find it concerning that China Carbon Neutral Development Group is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.

The Final Word

China Carbon Neutral Development Group's P/S remain high even after its stock plunged. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our examination of China Carbon Neutral Development Group revealed its poor three-year revenue trends aren't detracting from the P/S as much as we though, given they look worse than current industry expectations. When we see slower than industry revenue growth but an elevated P/S, there's considerable risk of the share price declining, sending the P/S lower. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
