SPT Energy Group Inc.'s (HKG:1251) 29% Share Price Surge Not Quite Adding Up

Listen to the news

SPT Energy Group Inc. (HKG:1251) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 29% after a shaky period beforehand. The annual gain comes to 110% following the latest surge, making investors sit up and take notice.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, it's still not a stretch to say that SPT Energy Group's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Energy Services industry in Hong Kong, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.5x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does SPT Energy Group's Recent Performance Look Like?

For example, consider that SPT Energy Group's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. Perhaps investors believe the recent revenue performance is enough to keep in line with the industry, which is keeping the P/S from dropping off. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on SPT Energy Group's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, SPT Energy Group would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 11% decrease to the company's top line. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 4.1% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 9.1% shows it's an unpleasant look.

With this information, we find it concerning that SPT Energy Group is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are way less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

What We Can Learn From SPT Energy Group's P/S?

Its shares have lifted substantially and now SPT Energy Group's P/S is back within range of the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Our look at SPT Energy Group revealed its shrinking revenues over the medium-term haven't impacted the P/S as much as we anticipated, given the industry is set to grow. When we see revenue heading backwards in the context of growing industry forecasts, it'd make sense to expect a possible share price decline on the horizon, sending the moderate P/S lower. Unless the the circumstances surrounding the recent medium-term improve, it wouldn't be wrong to expect a a difficult period ahead for the company's shareholders.
