Putian Communication Group Limited (HKG:1720) Held Back By Insufficient Growth Even After Shares Climb 32%

Simply Wall St·02/02/2026 22:39:27
Listen to the news

Putian Communication Group Limited (HKG:1720) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 32% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 84% in the last year.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, given about half the companies in Hong Kong have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 13x, you may still consider Putian Communication Group as an attractive investment with its 7.1x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

Recent times have been quite advantageous for Putian Communication Group as its earnings have been rising very briskly. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Putian Communication Group's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 160%. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen a very unpleasant 29% drop in EPS in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the market is expected to grow by 20% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term earnings decline into perspective.

With this information, we are not surprised that Putian Communication Group is trading at a P/E lower than the market. However, we think shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.

The Final Word

Putian Communication Group's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that Putian Communication Group maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its sliding earnings over the medium-term, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.

It is also worth noting that we have found 4 warning signs for Putian Communication Group (2 are a bit unpleasant!) that you need to take into consideration.
