By selling HK$53m worth of Kingland Group Holdings Limited (HKG:1751) stock at an average sell price of HK$0.45 over the last year, insiders seemed to have made the most of their holdings. The company's market worth decreased by HK$61m over the past week after the stock price dropped 11%, although insiders were able to minimize their losses
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the insider, Vincent Ip, for HK$13m worth of shares, at about HK$0.93 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (HK$1.74). When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. We note that the biggest single sale was 78% of Vincent Ip's holding. Notably Vincent Ip was also the biggest buyer, having purchased HK$19m worth of shares.
Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 78.54m shares worth HK$19m. But they sold 119.36m shares for HK$53m. In total, Kingland Group Holdings insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year.
