Listen to the news

The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, the Asia Tele-Net and Technology Corporation Limited (HKG:679) share price is up 72% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market return of around 29% (not including dividends). If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! It is also impressive that the stock is up 46% over three years, adding to the sense that it is a real winner.

Since the stock has added HK$189m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the last year Asia Tele-Net and Technology saw its earnings per share (EPS) drop below zero. While this may prove temporary, we'd consider it a negative, so we would not have expected to see the share price up. We might get a clue to explain the share price move by looking to other metrics.

Revenue was pretty stable on last year, so deeper research might be needed to explain the share price rise.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Asia Tele-Net and Technology's TSR for the last 1 year was 78%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Asia Tele-Net and Technology shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 78% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 3% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Asia Tele-Net and Technology better, we need to consider many other factors.
