Qingling Motors Co., Ltd.'s (HKG:1122) Popularity With Investors Under Threat As Stock Sinks 29%

Listen to the news

The Qingling Motors Co., Ltd. (HKG:1122) share price has softened a substantial 29% over the previous 30 days, handing back much of the gains the stock has made lately. Still, a bad month hasn't completely ruined the past year with the stock gaining 100%, which is great even in a bull market.

Although its price has dipped substantially, there still wouldn't be many who think Qingling Motors' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Hong Kong's Auto industry is similar at about 0.7x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Qingling Motors Has Been Performing

Revenue has risen firmly for Qingling Motors recently, which is pleasing to see. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to wane, which has kept the P/S from rising. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders probably aren't too pessimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is Qingling Motors' Revenue Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Qingling Motors' is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 8.2%. Still, revenue has barely risen at all in aggregate from three years ago, which is not ideal. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 19% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker, based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.

With this in mind, we find it intriguing that Qingling Motors' P/S is comparable to that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. They may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.

The Final Word

With its share price dropping off a cliff, the P/S for Qingling Motors looks to be in line with the rest of the Auto industry. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that Qingling Motors' average P/S is a bit surprising since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider industry forecast. When we see weak revenue with slower than industry growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, bringing the P/S back in line with expectations. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, it's hard to accept the current share price as fair value.
