TI Cloud Inc.'s (HKG:2167) Fundamentals Look Pretty Strong: Could The Market Be Wrong About The Stock?

Listen to the news

It is hard to get excited after looking at TI Cloud's (HKG:2167) recent performance, when its stock has declined 30% over the past three months. However, the company's fundamentals look pretty decent, and long-term financials are usually aligned with future market price movements. Particularly, we will be paying attention to TI Cloud's ROE today.

ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. In short, ROE shows the profit each dollar generates with respect to its shareholder investments.

How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?

The formula for ROE is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for TI Cloud is:

9.2% = CN¥48m ÷ CN¥517m (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2025).

The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. Another way to think of that is that for every HK$1 worth of equity, the company was able to earn HK$0.09 in profit.

What Has ROE Got To Do With Earnings Growth?

Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that don’t share these attributes.

A Side By Side comparison of TI Cloud's Earnings Growth And 9.2% ROE

When you first look at it, TI Cloud's ROE doesn't look that attractive. Yet, a closer study shows that the company's ROE is similar to the industry average of 8.1%. Having said that, TI Cloud has shown a modest net income growth of 6.4% over the past five years. Given the slightly low ROE, it is likely that there could be some other aspects that are driving this growth. Such as - high earnings retention or an efficient management in place.

As a next step, we compared TI Cloud's net income growth with the industry and were disappointed to see that the company's growth is lower than the industry average growth of 35% in the same period.

The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. The investor should try to establish if the expected growth or decline in earnings, whichever the case may be, is priced in. By doing so, they will have an idea if the stock is headed into clear blue waters or if swampy waters await. Is TI Cloud fairly valued compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.

Is TI Cloud Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively?

With a three-year median payout ratio of 40% (implying that the company retains 60% of its profits), it seems that TI Cloud is reinvesting efficiently in a way that it sees respectable amount growth in its earnings and pays a dividend that's well covered.

Along with seeing a growth in earnings, TI Cloud only recently started paying dividends. Its quite possible that the company was looking to impress its shareholders.

Summary

On the whole, we do feel that TI Cloud has some positive attributes. That is, a decent growth in earnings backed by a high rate of reinvestment. However, we do feel that that earnings growth could have been higher if the business were to improve on the low ROE rate. Especially given how the company is reinvesting a huge chunk of its profits. While we won't completely dismiss the company, what we would do, is try to ascertain how risky the business is to make a more informed decision around the company.
