The Honworld Group Limited (HKG:2226) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 25%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 31% in that time.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Honworld Group's P/S ratio of 0.7x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Food industry in Hong Kong is about the same. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

We'd have to say that with no tangible growth over the last year, Honworld Group's revenue has been unimpressive. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to only match most other companies at best over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from rising. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.
Although there are no analyst estimates available for Honworld Group, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.Honworld Group's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered virtually the same number to the company's top line as the year before. The longer-term trend has been no better as the company has no revenue growth to show for over the last three years either. So it seems apparent to us that the company has struggled to grow revenue meaningfully over that time.
This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 4.5% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this in mind, we find it intriguing that Honworld Group's P/S is comparable to that of its industry peers. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.
Following Honworld Group's share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that Honworld Group's average P/S is a bit surprising since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider industry forecast. When we see weak revenue with slower than industry growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, bringing the P/S back in line with expectations. Unless there is a significant improvement in the company's medium-term performance, it will be difficult to prevent the P/S ratio from declining to a more reasonable level.
And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Honworld Group (of which 2 are a bit concerning!) you should know about.
