We're Not Worried About Palisade Bio's (NASDAQ:PALI) Cash Burn

Simply Wall St·05/22/2026 10:18:26
Listen to the news

There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. Indeed, Palisade Bio (NASDAQ:PALI) stock is up 166% in the last year, providing strong gains for shareholders. But the harsh reality is that very many loss making companies burn through all their cash and go bankrupt.

In light of its strong share price run, we think now is a good time to investigate how risky Palisade Bio's cash burn is. For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

How Long Is Palisade Bio's Cash Runway?

A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. As at March 2026, Palisade Bio had cash of US$133m and no debt. Importantly, its cash burn was US$12m over the trailing twelve months. That means it had a cash runway of very many years as of March 2026. While this is only one measure of its cash burn situation, it certainly gives us the impression that holders have nothing to worry about. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.

How Is Palisade Bio's Cash Burn Changing Over Time?

Palisade Bio didn't record any revenue over the last year, indicating that it's an early stage company still developing its business. So while we can't look to sales to understand growth, we can look at how the cash burn is changing to understand how expenditure is trending over time. With the cash burn rate up 9.3% in the last year, it seems that the company is ratcheting up investment in the business over time. However, the company's true cash runway will therefore be shorter than suggested above, if spending continues to increase. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.

Can Palisade Bio Raise More Cash Easily?

While its cash burn is only increasing slightly, Palisade Bio shareholders should still consider the potential need for further cash, down the track. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).

Palisade Bio's cash burn of US$12m is about 3.9% of its US$315m market capitalisation. Given that is a rather small percentage, it would probably be really easy for the company to fund another year's growth by issuing some new shares to investors, or even by taking out a loan.

Is Palisade Bio's Cash Burn A Worry?

As you can probably tell by now, we're not too worried about Palisade Bio's cash burn. In particular, we think its cash runway stands out as evidence that the company is well on top of its spending. Although its increasing cash burn does give us reason for pause, the other metrics we discussed in this article form a positive picture overall. After taking into account the various metrics mentioned in this report, we're pretty comfortable with how the company is spending its cash, as it seems on track to meet its needs over the medium term. Separately, we looked at different risks affecting the company and spotted 4 warning signs for Palisade Bio (of which 2 shouldn't be ignored!) you should know about.
