BrainAurora Medical Technology Limited's (HKG:6681) stock price has dropped 28% in the previous week, but insiders who sold CN¥639m in stock over the past year have had less luck. The average selling price of CN¥4.92 is still lower than the current share price, or in other words, insiders would have been better off holding on to their shares.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
In fact, the recent purchase by Chief Strategy Officer & Chairman Zheng Tan was not their only acquisition of BrainAurora Medical Technology shares this year. They previously made an even bigger purchase of HK$515m worth of shares at a price of HK$5.60 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of HK$2.94. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when an insider has purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price. Zheng Tan was the only individual insider to buy during the last year. We note that Zheng Tan was also the biggest seller.

There was substantially more insider selling, than buying, of BrainAurora Medical Technology shares over the last three months. In total, insider Xiaoyi Wang sold HK$117m worth of shares in that time. Meanwhile Chief Strategy Officer & Chairman Zheng Tan bought HK$18m worth. Since the selling really does outweigh the buying, we'd say that these transactions may suggest that some insiders feel the company has been fully valued in recent months.
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. BrainAurora Medical Technology insiders own 44% of the company, currently worth about HK$1.8b based on the recent share price. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
