Over the last year, a good number of insiders have significantly increased their holdings in Everest Medicines Limited (HKG:1952). This is encouraging because it indicates that insiders are more optimistic about the company's prospects.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
Notably, that recent purchase by Non-Executive Director Wei Fu was not the only time they bought Everest Medicines shares this year. They previously made an even bigger purchase of HK$33m worth of shares at a price of HK$38.11 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being HK$30.20). While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock if insiders have bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price.
