There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. For example, biotech and mining exploration companies often lose money for years before finding success with a new treatment or mineral discovery. But while history lauds those rare successes, those that fail are often forgotten; who remembers Pets.com?
So should Tianjin Jinran Public Utilities (HKG:1265) shareholders be worried about its cash burn? In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. Let's start with an examination of the business' cash, relative to its cash burn.
You can calculate a company's cash runway by dividing the amount of cash it has by the rate at which it is spending that cash. In December 2025, Tianjin Jinran Public Utilities had CN¥519m in cash, and was debt-free. In the last year, its cash burn was CN¥114m. Therefore, from December 2025 it had 4.5 years of cash runway. A runway of this length affords the company the time and space it needs to develop the business. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.

At first glance it's a bit worrying to see that Tianjin Jinran Public Utilities actually boosted its cash burn by 21%, year on year. In light of that, the flat year on year operating leverage is a bit off-putting. Considering both these factors, we're not particularly excited by its growth profile. In reality, this article only makes a short study of the company's growth data. This graph of historic earnings and revenue shows how Tianjin Jinran Public Utilities is building its business over time.
Even though it seems like Tianjin Jinran Public Utilities is developing its business nicely, we still like to consider how easily it could raise more money to accelerate growth. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
Since it has a market capitalisation of CN¥243m, Tianjin Jinran Public Utilities' CN¥114m in cash burn equates to about 47% of its market value. From this perspective, it seems that the company spent a huge amount relative to its market value, and we'd be very wary of a painful capital raising.
Even though its cash burn relative to its market cap makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought Tianjin Jinran Public Utilities' cash runway was relatively promising. Even though we don't think it has a problem with its cash burn, the analysis we've done in this article does suggest that shareholders should give some careful thought to the potential cost of raising more money in the future. On another note, we conducted an in-depth investigation of the company, and identified 2 warning signs for Tianjin Jinran Public Utilities (1 is potentially serious!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
