FuelCell Pullback Deepens as Investors Weigh Data Center Promise Against Near-Term Risks

Benzinga·08/18/2026 16:05:59
Listen to the news

FuelCell Energy Inc. (NASDAQ:FCEL) shares fell Tuesday as investors pulled back from more volatile stocks amid broader market weakness.

The Nasdaq dropped 1.85%, the S&P 500 lost 0.66% and Industrials declined about 1.1%.

FCEL Slides With Broader Market Weakness

Tuesday’s decline appears largely tied to broader market pressure rather than a company-specific catalyst. With FCEL up more than 390% over the past 12 months, the stock is also vulnerable to profit-taking when sentiment turns defensive.

Market breadth remained positive, with eight sectors advancing and three declining, suggesting the weakness was relatively concentrated. Industrials were among the laggards, down about 1.08%, with FCEL underperforming the sector.

FCEL Faces Dilution, Earnings And Execution Pressure

FuelCell Energy has faced several recent pressure points, including dilution concerns tied to its $225 million July public offering priced at $21 per share.

The company also reported fiscal second quarter revenue of $35.6 million, down 5% year over year, while backlog fell 9.9% to $1.14 billion.

At the same time, investors are watching whether its growing data center pipeline can translate into contracted backlog and revenue, while the stock digests a sharp rally that previously pushed shares to a 52-week high in June.

FCEL Technical Setup: Key Levels To Watch

Despite Tuesday’s pullback, FCEL remains in a longer-term uptrend, trading about 19% above its 100-day SMA and 66% above its 200-day SMA.

The short-term picture is more mixed, with shares roughly flat against the 20-day SMA and 2.4% below the 50-day SMA, pointing to choppy trading.

RSI at 49.95 signals neutral momentum, with neither buyers nor sellers holding a clear advantage.

  • Resistance: $25.50 — a key area where rebounds may stall.
  • Support: $18.50 — an important downside level if selling pressure builds.

FCEL Wall Street Targets

The stock carries a Buy rating with an average price forecast of $19.00. Recent analyst moves include:

  • UBS: Upgraded to Buy (Raises Target to $27.00) (July 14)
  • B. Riley Securities: Upgraded to Buy (Raises Target to $32.00) (June 29)
  • UBS: Neutral (Raises Target to $22.00) (June 26)

FCEL ETF Exposure: Key Funds and Weightings

  • State Street SPDR S&P Kensho Clean Power ETF (NYSE:CNRG): 4.08% Weight
  • Global X Hydrogen ETF (NASDAQ:HYDR): 7.24% Weight

Significance: Because FCEL carries such a heavy weight in these funds, any significant inflows or outflows for these ETFs will likely force automatic buying or selling of the stock.
