Here's Why We're Watching Synagistics' (HKG:2562) Cash Burn Situation

Listen to the news

Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.

Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether Synagistics (HKG:2562) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). First, we'll determine its cash runway by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves.

How Long Is Synagistics' Cash Runway?

You can calculate a company's cash runway by dividing the amount of cash it has by the rate at which it is spending that cash. Synagistics has such a small amount of debt that we'll set it aside, and focus on the S$22m in cash it held at June 2026. Importantly, its cash burn was S$22m over the trailing twelve months. So it had a cash runway of approximately 12 months from June 2026. That's not too bad, but it's fair to say the end of the cash runway is in sight, unless cash burn reduces drastically. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.

How Well Is Synagistics Growing?

We reckon the fact that Synagistics managed to shrink its cash burn by 25% over the last year is rather encouraging. Revenue also improved during the period, increasing by 8.2%. Considering the factors above, the company doesn’t fare badly when it comes to assessing how it is changing over time. Of course, we've only taken a quick look at the stock's growth metrics, here. You can take a look at how Synagistics has developed its business over time by checking this visualization of its revenue and earnings history.

How Easily Can Synagistics Raise Cash?

Even though it seems like Synagistics is developing its business nicely, we still like to consider how easily it could raise more money to accelerate growth. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).

Synagistics has a market capitalisation of S$57m and burnt through S$22m last year, which is 38% of the company's market value. That's not insignificant, and if the company had to sell enough shares to fund another year's growth at the current share price, you'd likely witness fairly costly dilution.

So, Should We Worry About Synagistics' Cash Burn?

On this analysis of Synagistics' cash burn, we think its cash burn reduction was reassuring, while its cash burn relative to its market cap has us a bit worried. Summing up, we think the Synagistics' cash burn is a risk, based on the factors we mentioned in this article.
