What's Going On With Silicon Motion Technology Stock Tuesday?

Listen to the news

Silicon Motion Technology Corporation (NASDAQ:SIMO) stock rose more than 2% in Tuesday’s premarket trading, rebounding after a 16.76% plunge in the previous session.

The stock fell Monday amid a broad technology and semiconductor sell-off. Concerns from leading artificial intelligence executives about the pace and safety of frontier AI development fueled selling across chip and hardware stocks.

The rebound comes despite a softer market backdrop. Nasdaq futures fell 0.13%, while S&P 500 futures slipped 0.16%.

With no major company-specific headline driving Tuesday’s move, the early gain points to bargain hunting after Monday’s sharp sell-off.

Traders are now watching whether buyers can defend nearby support and push Silicon Motion back toward its short-term moving averages.

Technical Analysis

Silicon Motion remains under near-term technical pressure. The stock trades about 5% below its 20-day simple moving average of $253.96. It is also roughly 8% below its 50-day SMA of $263.11 and 100-day SMA of $263.45.

However, shares remain about 28% above the 200-day SMA of $188.91. That keeps the longer-term trend positive.

The 20-day SMA remains below the 50-day SMA, signaling short-term weakness. However, the 50-day SMA remains above the 200-day SMA.

Momentum is also showing early signs of improvement. The MACD is above its signal line, while the histogram is positive. That suggests selling pressure may be easing.

Key resistance sits near $275. Support is around $239.

Analyst Outlook

The stock has a Buy consensus rating and an average price forecast of $343.

B. Riley Securities and Susquehanna raised their price forecasts to $350 on July 31. Needham raised its forecast to $355 on July 30.

Benzinga Edge Rankings

Silicon Motion scores strongly on Momentum at 97.53, Growth at 90.86 and Quality at 82.38. Its Value score is more neutral at 47.63.

The Benzinga Edge scorecard points to a growth- and momentum-driven profile. However, the stock still needs to reclaim key short-term moving averages to strengthen its technical setup.

Price Action

Silicon Motion shares rose 2.22% to $242.06 in Tuesday’s premarket trading, according to Benzinga Pro data.
