Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk has said the automaker will wind down Cybertruck production at its Gigafactory Texas facility around the middle of 2027 to make room for increased production of its Cybercab robotaxi.

Cybertruck Sunset, Cybercab Expansion

In a post on the social media platform X late Thursday, the billionaire confirmed the move. “Tesla will be winding down production of the Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year to make room for increased Cybercab production,” Musk said in the post.

In a separate post minutes after the Cybertruck announcement, Musk shared a screen capture of a post he made in 2018, a picture of an astronaut dummy inside his own personal Tesla Roadster, which was launched as a dummy payload to space in 2018 during the Falcon Heavy test flight.

Cybertruck So Far

Unveiled as a prototype in 2019, the Cybertruck was initially scheduled to enter production in 2021 but faced multiple delays before production began in 2023. Tesla started delivering the electric pickup to customers in November that year.

While Musk had targeted producing 250,000 units of the product annually, the Cybertruck failed to live up to its hype and has disappointed in sales. According to estimates, the company sold 7,000 to 8,000 units of the Cybertruck in Q3, 2026 and an annualized 28,000 to 32,000 units sold, well below Musk’s target.

The Cybertruck’s sales in Australia and New Zealand were also halted by Tesla recently, which had cast doubt over the future of the product. The truck has been criticized for its design, with critics saying that Tesla should instead release a more traditional-looking truck to boost sales.

The Cybertruck faces competition from Ford Motor Co.’s (NYSE:F) upcoming Fathom EV pickup truck, General Motors Co.‘s (NYSE:GM) Chevrolet Silverado EV, as well as the upcoming $25,000 Slate pickup truck.

Price Action: TSLA shares were up 0.62% to $345.82 during overnight trading on Thursday.
