8x8 (NASDAQ:EGHT) shareholders are up 11% this past week, but still in the red over the last five years

Listen to the news

It's nice to see the 8x8, Inc. (NASDAQ:EGHT) share price up 11% in a week. But spare a thought for the long term holders, who have held the stock as it bled value over the last five years. Five years have seen the share price descend precipitously, down a full 90%. The recent bounce might mean the long decline is over, but we are not confident. The important question is if the business itself justifies a higher share price in the long term. We really hope anyone holding through that price crash has a diversified portfolio. Even when you lose money, you don't have to lose the lesson.

On a more encouraging note the company has added US$22m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the five-year loss for shareholders.

We've discovered 1 warning sign about 8x8. View them for free.

8x8 isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

Over five years, 8x8 grew its revenue at 11% per year. That's a fairly respectable growth rate. So it is unexpected to see the stock down 14% per year in the last five years. The truth is that the growth might be below expectations, and investors are probably worried about the continual losses.

A Different Perspective

8x8 shareholders are down 25% for the year, but the market itself is up 9.5%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 14% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We'd need to see some sustained improvements in the key metrics before we could muster much enthusiasm. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Case in point: We've spotted 1 warning sign for 8x8 you should be aware of.
